TIMELINE: PAUL SMITH

The definitive guide to the revered British mens and womenswear brand.

With his cycling ambitions brought to a sudden end after a near fatal accident, Paul Smith opens his first boutique in his native Nottingham at the age of 24 with the help of his girlfriend (now wife) Pauline Denyer and begins tailoring classes in the evenings.

Smith shows his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label to critical acclaim.

Expanding his retail business, Smith opens his first London store on Floral Street in Covent Garden offering an eclectic combination of clothes and different obscure and novelty finds that he sourced.

After a further two stores opening in London, Paul Smith unveils his first boutique in New York.

After discovering that around 15% of his clothes were in fact bought by women, Paul Smith introduces a womenswear collection offering his signature modern cuts and tailoring in fine, classic materials with a feminine edge.

Paul Smith is awarded a knighthood for his services to British fashion and weds his partner of 30 years, Pauline, on the same day.

Intended only to be used for one season, the now iconic and signature Paul Smith Stripes design launches.

Celebrating over 40 years in fashion, the highly anticipated exhibition, Hello, My Name Is Paul Smith opens mid-November in the Design Museum, London, exploring his career to date and future developments.
