THE CITY GUIDE: BIRMINGHAM

Our new City Guide blog posts will share an insider’s viewpoint of the cities that our stores are based in. We will be asking key staff members to give us their top tips for eating, drinking and entertainment in their home towns. For the first post in the series, Menswear Manager Jamie shares his favourite addresses in Birmingham.

The Secret Address: The Electric Cinema

47–49 Station Street, Birmingham B5 4DY. Tel.0121 643 7879

The oldest working cinema in the UK, the Electric Cinema is an entirely different experience to your regular film viewing. Seat yourself on a comfortable chair or roomy sofa and text your refreshment requests to the waiters as you enjoy the old-fashioned cinema experience. There’s no popcorn and fizzy drinks here, instead treat yourself to absinthe fountains and homemade cakes in the exquisite surrounding of the art deco bar.

The Hotel: The Hilton Birmingham Metropole

National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham B40 1PP. Tel. 0121 780 4242

Conveniently located close to Birmingham International Airport and within walking distance of the NEC, the Hilton Metropole is the most luxurious place to rest your head in the city. Two excellent restaurants, a Livingwell Health Club and spa and a relaxing indoor swimming pool may tempt you to stay in the hotel despite the nearby transport links to the city centre.

The Event: Birmingham International Fashion Week

Birmingham City Banqueting Suite, Victoria Square, Birmingham B1 1BB

One of the key events in the Birmingham calendar was cemented with last year’s Birmingham International Fashion Week. Held over two days from 28th February – 1st March, the event begins with a champagne reception and unfolds to present exciting design talent from both local and international designers and brands.

The Restaurant: Simpsons

20 Highfield Road, Edgbaston B15 3DU. Tel: 0121 454 3434

Situated on Highfield Road, this Michelin star restaurant has recently been named one of the Top 30 in the country by the Sunday Times Food List. Chef-Patron Andreas Antona is well known in the industry for his culinary expertise and welcoming persona; leading a team of chefs who are renowned for their experimentation with new flavours when creating their seasonal dishes.

The Bar: The Lost and Found

8 Bennetts Hill, Birmingham B2 5RS. Tel.0121 643 9293

Inspired by Victorian explorer and botanist Hettie G. Watson, this Grade 2 listed building has been transformed into a fusion of a decadent drinking den and a natural history museum. The nineteenth century décor is complemented by canopies of plants, projections of butterflies and apothecary-style jars of flowers – there is even a hidden room to find if you follow the clues scattered around the bar! The cocktail menu focuses of rediscovering forgotten classics with an extensive menu of drinks that you won’t find elsewhere in the city.
