Welcome to Liverpool! The second city to feature in our City Guides series, we offer an insider’s view to the North-West hot spot, courtesy of Trainee Manager Joseph Copeman. Read on to discover Joseph’s favourite addresses in the 2008 European Capital of Culture.

Restaurant: Home

14 School Lane, Liverpool One, L1 3BT

Home, a new addition to School Lane in the heart of Liverpool One isn't just your average café/bar/restaurant. Set over three floors in the grand setting of a former 19th century antiques warehouse there are a number of different spaces in which to dine, drink and relax including a retro canteen, lounge and living room, all with an eclectic sense of style. Be sure not to miss the breakfast filled with locally sourced produce including sour dough bread from the local artisan bakery and eggs from West Kirby that are poached to perfection. Finally, stop off at the bottled beer shop to take home a taste of Europe and beyond.

Hotel: The Hope Street Hotel

40 Hope Street, Liverpool, L1 9DA

The Hope Street hotel is a boutique hotel with a difference. Offering luxury comfort in 89 individually designed rooms, every detail is carefully considered: solid oak floors with underfloor heating, Egyptian cotton sheets, wide screen televisions and even Jacob Jensen telephones. Even the bathroom feels like a spa, with a rain-dance shower (that's a dinner-plate sized shower head to you and I), mist-free mirrors and REN products. Enjoy the panoramic view of the city's World Heritage site from the comfort of your room.

Secret Place: Berry and Rye

48 Berry Street, Liverpool, L14JQ

A knock on the door of Liverpool's 48 Berry Street is all it takes to be taken back to the speakeasies of 1930s Prohibition America. Off the beaten track of Liverpool's bar circuit, Berry and Rye is Liverpool's best-kept secret. As the name suggests, the bar houses an impressive selection of whiskey sourced from the world over, along with speciality beers and an impressive wine list. Go all Art Nouveau and be sure to channel your inner Flapper Girl/Regal Gent by the candlelight.

Bar: Mello Mello

40/42 Slater Street, Liverpool, L1 4BX

There's no mistaking Mello Mello on Liverpool's Slater Street with its huge sash windows and it's brick and bright blue frontage. This self-described 'Independent Creative Hub, Venue, Bar and Vegetarian Restaurant' was founded in 2007 as a Community Arts organisation with a mission to regenerate the area through the power of arts and culture. The space has now grown from a simple coffee shop to a bar, vegetarian kitchen, jazz and performance venue that adapts it's offer to the time of day. The prefect retro hangout.

Berry & Rye Mello Mello Grand National

Event: The Grand National, Aintree

Aintree Race Course, Saturday 5th April 2014

As the same suggests, The Races are the grandest event in the Liverpool calendar, so much so that they could be described as a national holiday. This year, the three days of festivities run from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th April and will attract over 155,000 visitors. Look out for the amazing fashion on display, especially during Ladies Day on Friday 4th, where stylish women fight it out for the winning look. Having a flutter has never been such fun. The only question that remains: have you visited Flannels Liverpool yet to buy that show stopping dress from the Spring collections?
