With a distinctive aesthetic and instantly recognisable logo, Ralph Lauren’s namesake founder and CEO has often been acknowledged for mirroring the aspirational image that his brand vividly upholds. With Polo sitting as the corporations mainline, it has become renowned for its preppy tailoring and classic casualwear.

Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1939, the American designer had his first real foray into the fashion industry as a sales assistant with Brooks Brothers aged 24; swiftly moving onto making and selling ties that he made out of scraps of fabric. With financial backing in 1967, Lauren opened a necktie store in Manhattan and the Polo brand was born.

In the subsequent years, Lauren developed a menswear collection of wearable high-quality basics that he felt every man should have in their wardrobe. Drawing inspiration from traditional collegiate attire, the brand quickly became renowned for their tailored blazers with brass buttons and patches, cashmere crew necks, varsity jackets and button-down Oxford shirts synonymous with all-American style.

Lauren truly made his mark upon contemporary menswear with the introduction of polo shirt in 1972. Originally released in 24 colours, the style became an instant classic and has become a timeless style staple for every man’s wardrobe. The iconic polo player logo features on every single polo shirt, often in contrasting hues to strongly identify the brand.

The casual-wear line now includes a wide array of garments, ideal for building up a reliable weekend

wardrobe; including sweatshirts, trainers, chinos and shorts.

Recognised as a highly established sportswear label, in 2006 Polo became the first official outfitter of Wimbledon, redesigning the uniforms and even the tennis tournament’s logo. The brand was later asked to design the uniform for Team USA at the 2008 Olympics, a relationship that remains to this day.

A man often compared to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby (a character he had the opportunity of dressing for the 1974 film), Ralph Lauren’s own story is quite that of the American dream. His ambition and self-invention have resulted in a significant and internationally known company that is one of the largest fashion houses to emerge in the last century.
