WORDS: TOM KEOWN Photographer: Jane Doe

You’re low on Vitamin D and daylight savings have begun to wreak havoc with your body clock, but not everything about winter is gloomy. One major silver lining? We’ve officially entered knitwear season. With so many knits on offer from the new collections it can be hard to know where to begin, so we’ve put together a list of standouts for you to choose from to match your winter vibe. Looking for something timeless? There’s a knit for that. Or are you in the mood for something more playful? There’s a knit for that, too.

From Balmain to Saint Laurent and Fendi, these are the knits to know.

1. THE VARSITY-INSPIRED

Meet the rebooted varsity knit you didn’t know your winter wardrobe needed. The Belgio cardigan from Weekend Max Mara brings collegiate charm into grown-up style territory. Think intarsia patches, rich virgin-wool yarn, and a relaxed button-up silhouette that nods to old-school campus dressing without making you look like you’re en route to a costume party. Primed for layering over crisp shirts or under tailored coats, this is the kind of knit that lets you inject personality into cold-weather looks without veering into gimmick.

2. THE ARGYLE

It’s official: the Argyle knit has made it off the golf course and onto the streets of the world’s fashion capitals. Once reserved exclusively for granddads, the Argyle has been given a chic new lease of life thanks to it being centred in the recent knitwear offerings of today’s most talked-about brands. Special mention goes to Miu Miu, whose particular brand of intellectual-chic goes hand-in-hand with the beloved diamond-shaped pattern.

3. THE KNIT DRESS

This mini dress from Balmain is knitwear with the temperature turned all the way up. It’s an example of how a knit can command the room: sculpted ribbing, a plunging V-neck, and the label’s signature golden buttons make a memorable impression. It’s the kind of piece that’s tailor-made for Christmas work parties that spill into dinner dates: sharp, sleek, elevated.

4. THE STATEMENT SCARF

As temperatures continue to drop, where would we be without our trusted scarves? It’s arguably the most versatile option in our cold weather arsenals. Unlike bulky outerwear, it can be easily slipped on as we emerge from muggy tubby stations and onto windy street corners. Swedish brand Acne Studios is unquestionably the master of scarves: a checked, oversized, ultra-soft Acne scarf is instantly recognisable - and coveted - by those in the know.

5. THE CHECKED BEANIE

Alongside a scarf, the most hardworking member of your winter wardrobe is undoubtedly the knit beanie. One of the most hardworking items in your wardrobe? A catch-all, neutral beanie. And this iteration from Burberry is a must. In a chunky ribbed knit, versatile black colourway and featuring the brand’s signature check, it’ll keep you warm and your cold weather outfits elevated.
