On Trend: Cut Out And Keep

After a year of oversized loungewear and comfy threads, our SS21 uniform is looking a little more naked. The runways showed off micro minis with hemlines shorter than ever, sheer shirts and dresses, and a whole host of crop tops, but its designers’ appreciation of cut outs – of all shapes and sizes – that’s gaining serious traction. Whether you want to show a sliver or fully flaunt it, skin is in and it’s time to celebrate our bodies once again.

We don’t like to pick favourites, but the cut-out dress is top of our list. Draped over the bodies of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber and all over our Instagram feeds, Cult Gaia’s Serita knit dress has become a firm favourite. Falling mid-calf, its slashed at the sides and designed to sit snuggly to your curves. Exclusive Australian label Natalie Rolt is famed for their cut-out designs that adorn tops, dress and jumpsuits, but it’s the Aston, complete with two front cut outs, that we’re obsessing over. Want to show just a slither? Self-Portrait’s rib knit midi and Miu Miu’s Sport micro tick all the right boxes.

With travel options limited this summer the Great British weather has pulled out all the stops, serving up a heatwave worthy of the season’s hottest swimwear designs. Self-Portrait and Zimmerman have opted for subtly removed panels that bare just a touch of flesh, while just-landed label Reina Olga is leaving little to the imagination with their standout animal print designs.

Bralettes, brop tops… whatever name you want to give them, the newly redesigned crop top is cementing itself as a key trend of the season. Deborah Lyons have married it with wraparound ribbons to give the illusion of cut outs. Fancy something less out there? Mugler’s Segmented blazer, complete with missing side panels, has gained cult status amongst the fashion set, while Magda Butrym’s cut-out body pairs perfectly with tailored trousers, wraparound skirts or slouchy jeans.
