How To: Apply your Lipstick Like a Pro

Nailing that perfect lip is no easy task. Luckily, we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve. From lip liners and lip brushes to some unexpected tips (think setting powders and highlighters), this is everything you need to know to apply lipstick like a pro.

Do you need to prep you lips before applying product?

The answer is always yes. When it comes to creating any makeup look, prep is key. Start by using a lip scrub – this will help to buff away dead skin cells and leave lips smooth. Next, use a lip balm or oil for a shot of hydration – this is going to stop the lipstick from clinging to any dry spots or cracks. The easiest way to create an even lip base? Concealer. Use a beauty blender to lightly tap a bit of concealer across the lips – it’s a great way to diminish any natural colour you don’t want clashing with the lip shade.

Is lip liner necessary?

We’ll say it again for the people at the back – absolutely. If you’re worried about your lipstick bleeding or smudging, apply lip liner around the edges of your lips. This’ll help to confine the product to your lips and prevent it from moving onto your skin – never the look we’re going for. Wondering how to get your lipstick to last all day? You can turn any lipstick into a long-wear formula by applying lip liner all over the lips, (if it’s good enough for Kylie Jenner, it’s good enough for us). Top tip? After you’ve applied your lipstick, use the lip liner to clean up the edges and make the colour if more precise.

What's the best way to apply lipstick?

Always start with the product in the middle of your lips and blend outward. Focussing on the centre of your lips helps to control the product and draws attention to the fullest part of your lips – clever. Looking to achieve a flawless lip look? For precision, always have a lip brush at hand, (it’s also the best way to get into the corners of the lips without making a mess).

Now your lipstick is on, we have one word for you: blot. Blotting is essential, (you don’t want to end up with excess product across you face or lipstick on your teeth). Once you’ve blotted, it’s time for the setting powder to shine. Place a tissue over your lips and lightly tap a translucent setting powder onto the tissue. Wondering how this works? The powder will absorb the excess moisture of the lipstick and lock it in place. Simple but effective.
