POST-PARTY RECOVERY GARMS:

THE ONLY THING YOU’LL WANT TO WEAR THE DAY AFTER

Fashion, friendship and sisterhood: step into the world of fashion rental.

WORDS: MARNI ROSE MCFALL

POV: it’s the morning after the party of the year. And the unrelenting energy has, well, begun to relent. Enter: post-party recovery garms. Aka, the loungewear you’ll want to wear the morning after. Soft grey sweatshirts, cosy tracksuits, plush puffer jackets. Head-to-toe fluffy coats, ultra-luxe matching PJs and skincare that’ll wash your sins away. This party season, we’re ready for anything. And we’re taking a little inspiration from some pop culture icons (read: Cameron Diaz, Bella Hadid and Kevin McCallister) as we get ready to hibernate.

If retreating to bed and hiding from the world is high on your post-party agenda, then we suggest you take some outfit inspo from everybody’s favourite anglophile, Amanda Woods (aka Cameron Diaz in The Holiday). Her roster of cashmere coats, cable-knit jumpers and endlessly chic scarves make the case that Diaz was the blueprint for what would become quiet luxury (trust us, just wait until your annual rewatch and you’ll see what we mean), and are the perfect foundation for a cosy outfit to recover from your party antics in. The way to do it? Take the chicest coat on the market (aka, Bottega Veneta’s Melagne Cashmere Coat) and throw it over Khaite’s cream sweater and Dolce&Gabbana’s Satin Pyjama Trousers. And if you really want to take things up a notch? Miu Miu’s Ribbed Knit Balaclava and Jil Sander’s thick wool scarf will do the trick.

LOUNGEWEAR, THE IT GIRL WAY

2023 was the year we took our trousers off. According to the fashion set’s favourite data girlie, Data But Make It Fashion, pants-less looks increased by 56% in the AW23 runway season compared to the SS23 season, and, to date, patron saints of the no-pants look include the likes of Julia Fox and Kylie Jenner as well as Bella Hadid. Borrowed boxers may already be a staple of your post-party repertoire, but they’re certified fashion caviar right now. Hang like a Hadid and style big, baggy boxers with a baby tee, leather bomber and chunky UGGs for ultimate effect. PSA: if you must leave the house the next day (to presumably get pizza or paracetamol), this is the look to have on hand. Prefer to keep your pants on? Fair enough. Opt for big baggy sweats via Off-White and a pair of cult clogs from Bottega Veneta.

GREY SKY THINKING

The sky is grey and when we’re in post-party recovery mode, so are we. And, sometimes, the best thing to do is admit defeat. Which is why we recommend leaning into the vibe with a softer-than-thou grey sweater. The humble wardrobe staple has become a hot topic, after Miu Miu sent librarian-coded grey cardis down the runway and they quickly became one of the brand’s hottest pieces that season. So, which styles should you add to your wardrobe? Prada’s Cashmere Sweatshirt speaks for itself in that it’s Prada and it’s cashmere, while Loewe have decorated a simple cardi with tiny silver studs. Miu Miu have proved that geek chic is very much still a thing with their grey Diamond Sweater vest. And if you’re sweating buckets, The Attico and Saint Laurent are here to hand you a timeless grey hoodie. Rudolph is sitting out the reindeer games today.

Larger than life, gravel grazing outerwear has been a hot topic in the fashion world since the beginning of the year. But now’s the time to really lean into it. Take a leaf out of Emily Ratajkowski’s book and don a floor-to-ceiling cosy coat. For a subtle take, opt for low-key luxe grey overcoats via Acne Studios and Dolce&Gabbana. If you think a little dopamine dressing can shake the cobwebs away, then Dolce&Gabbana’s Father Christmas coded bright red coat will make your nice list. Feel like dressing like a Christmas teddy bear? Allow Max Mara to show you how it’s done.

CHRISTMAS PJS

For obvious reasons, ‘00s-era Jude Law is a mainstay on the festive mood boards. But when the party is over? We’ll be channelling Jude Law and Ewan McGregor from this 2002 edition of The Telegraph. Dippy eggs and soldiers and matching PJs? It’s as good as the post party can get. And if you’re wondering what ultra-luxe, Christmas pjs you should add to your wardrobe? Allow three wise (fashion) men to guide you. Gucci have delivered the ultimate festive pyjamas with this red velvet and logo-adorned set. Dolce&Gabanna have kept it classic with a rich, royal blue matching set. And as for Loewe? Their silk pyjamas are luxe, lilac and likely to be your favourite purchase of the season.

(BLISSFULLY) HOME ALONE

While Kevin McCallister’s parents were pretty clueless when it came to child safety, the wardrobe they’d picked out for the kid holds up. Cosy, chic and so Christmassy, the bundle of a red scarf, knitted beanie and plump puffer jackets works just as well on a grown up circa 2023 as it did on a child circa 1990. Who says grown-ups can’t wear kids’ clothes? Opt for a Moncler Puffer Jacket, a pair of Palm Angels signature Track Pants and a seasonal scarf from Jacquemus, who are creating It knits quicker than Kevin McCallister caught crooks. The finishing touch? Moncler’s snow-white beanie. Merry Christmas ya filthy animals.

TAKING RECOVERY SERIOUSLY

When you’re done wrapping yourself up in cosy luxury garments to ease the pain of the morning after, it’s time to show your skin some love. Enter: the post-party beauty essentials. For the all-important everything shower, Rituals have you covered with their Karma Gift Set that comes with the brand’s iconic shower foam, body cream, candle and more so you can fully reset, while Benefit’s All In One Cleansing Wand will provide a deep cleanse of all your sins. If you’re need of a serious pamper, Pixi’s Dream Eye Patches calm and replenish the skin around your eyes, so even if you’ve been out all night, it won’t look like it. For a luxurious touch, look to Chantecaille’s Gold Recovery Mask which is infused with 24K gold, silk and antioxidants to revitalise skin. Plus, nothing makes you feel more like you’ve got your life together than a good face mask. And when the time comes to finally catch up on your beauty sleep? Slip’s Sleep Mask will keep your dreams sweet and combat signs of ageing. That’s what our dreams are made of.
