On Trend: By Women, For Women

Donatella. Miuccia. Vivienne. The fashion world is awash with a host of phenomenal women, and with International Women's Day falling on Monday 8th March, we're taking the opportunity to pay tribute to some of our finest female designers. Pioneers, trailblazers, and responsible for creating threads women actually want to wear: meet the women who get it done in style.

Ganni has gained cult-like status over the past few years, responsible in no small part for the renaissance of Scandi style that has taken over our Instagram feeds. And we have Ditte Reffstrup to thank. A Copenhagen-based buyer back in 2009, her impeccable style brought her to the label's founder, Frans Truelsen, who asked for a helping hand. Reffstrup stepped in, and a decade-plus later, her vision for the brand — romantic, ruffled, unafraid of quirkiness — has made Ganni a leader in the world of womenswear.

If you've looked at fashion news lately, you may have seen that Raf Simons has taken his talents to a certain Italian megabrand. However, it speaks volumes that he willingly enters Prada as a co-creative director alongside Miuccia Prada — regardless of her familial ties to the house, Miuccia is Prada. Since joining the family business in 1978, she took her grandfather's company from a single shop in Milan to global mega brand. You love the Prada style of nylon? Miuccia originated that with her accessories in the '80s, forever redefining the idea of luxury, making it more practical, more wearable, and yes, a little less pretty. And she's still doing it.

Originally head designer for Versus, Donatella stepped into the Versace design position after the death of her brother Gianni. Despite the tragic nature in which she entered the role, she became something of an icon herself, and is now the longest-reigning designer at the helm of the label. She was also the one responsible for evolving the brand's aesthetic from the hedonistic and provocative towards something she calls "more realistic".

One of our hottest new labels, The Attico is the brainchild of Milan-based designers Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini. Born from a collective desire to inject glamour into the wardrobes of women the world over, the duo has mastered the art of creating pieces that will feel as at home on your next wild night as they will layered into your everyday wardrobe. With mass Instagram followings, spots on Forbes under 30 lists, and aspirations to grow their collections into an all-encompassing lifestyle brand, you get the feeling Ambrosio and Tordini are only just getting started.

You don't get much more iconic in the world of British fashion than Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood.  A true trailblazer, she's forged a path bringing together fashion and activism, effortlessly captured the zeitgeist of punk style, and heroed the traditional techniques of centuries past (she calls herself a "plunderer"). They don't make many like Dame Vivienne and we couldn't love her more.
