THIS IS HOW TO MASTER TRANSITIONAL DRESSING

Go all in on layering, make outerwear a priority and let your footwear do the talking: this is how to navigate that tricky in between weather…

Summer had its moment (and then some). But autumn has finally come around . And with it comes the most confusing time of the year to get dressed. Too cold for just a tee, too warm for your puffer: welcome to transitional dressing. The good news? This is also the most exciting time to experiment. The trick is to invest in a handful of transitional pieces that do double duty: layerable, versatile and weather-proof enough to handle whatever the British skies throw at you.

On the hit list? Pieces made for layering, light outerwear and must-have footwear that’ll instantly refresh your wardrobe. It’s time to stock up your coat collection with bombers and leather jackets, pile up your layers and refresh your wardrobe essentials – think hoodies, trainers and loafers.

Here’s how to nail transitional dressing for men for AW25.

THE KEY AUTUMN JACKETS TO INVEST IN

First stop, jackets. Outerwear is your summer-to-autumn anchor piece; the item you’ll throw on and off more times than you can count. This season, it’s all about bombers, puffers and utility jackets, updated with luxe fabrics and subtle twists.

Bomber jackets are back in full force. Gucci is sticking to the classics with sharp, varsity-inspired cuts that give jeans-and-a-tee instant polish, while Balenciaga is pushing proportions with oversized silhouettes and buttery-soft leather bomber jackets. In early autumn, layer yours over a white tee and relaxed, baggy denim. As the temperatures drop, pile it over a hoodie or knit for extra mileage.

But bombers aren’t the only outerwear game in town. Windbreakers and utility jackets are staying strong, with *that* green jacket of the 2010s having a revival. Stone Island’s technical styles bring a utilitarian finish that layers with knits and scarves, while Moncler proves it can do more, with chore-jacket cuts designed for city living.

Alternatively, join the blazer revival. Once reserved for boardrooms, blazers have broken out as a true transitional hero. For AW25, Prada is keeping things corporate with sharp, tailored cuts that work just as well over relaxed denim as they do with trousers . Alexander McQueen, on the other hand, is bringing a statement edge, think strong shoulders, dramatic lines and blazers that blur the line between outerwear and tailoring. Throw an oversized blazer over a hoodie and jeans for when you want to put in minimal effort, or pair with tailored trousers and loafers when the dress code calls for smart but not stiff.

Meanwhile, denim jackets are holding their ground as a menswear staple. The AW25 update leans oversized and versatile: shrugged over hoodies, layered under coats, or paired with sharp trousers. Saint Laurent keeps it slick with structured shoulders in deep indigo, while Vivienne Westwood adds her rebellious spin with tartan trims and punk-tinged details. However you wear it, the denim jacket proves it’s still the hardest-working layer in a man’s wardrobe.

Keep one lightweight jacket and one heavier option in rotation and swap between them depending on the forecast. The easiest way to stay a step ahead of the weatherman…

IT’S ALL IN THE LAYERING

Autumn Layering is less about staying warm and more about outsmarting the forecast. The goal? Build looks you can add to or strip back without feeling like you’re playing wardrobe Jenga.

If there are two layering staples you’ll be reaching for on repeat this season, it’s knitwear and scarves. They’re the building blocks of any good transitional wardrobe: light enough for sunny spells, warm enough for breezy evening, and easy to style.

Lightweight cardigans, zip-neck jumpers and fine cashmere knits are the pieces you’ll reach for on repeat - the kind you can wear solo now and pile under coats later. Bottega Veneta’s light grey cashmere cardi is already on its way to cult status. Alexander McQueen is sharpening up men’s knitwear with sculptural cuts and clever detailing. And Acne Studios is, as always, making it cool again with asymmetric designs that turn a jumper into a statement.

And then there's scarves. Big, fluffy, warm: they hold the ability to instantly elevate a look and add on a heap of warmth to lighter jackets and your knits during sweater weather. Of course, no conversation about scarves is complete without Burberry. Their checks have earned permanent street-style status; instantly recognisable, they prove that classics really can outlast trends. This season, their oversized cashmere iterations are doubling up as wearable blankets, perfect for when autumn evenings turn brisk.

Think in threes: base (tee or shirt), mid (knit or hoodie), outer (jacket). That way, you can always add or strip back without losing balance.

Season to season, trend after trend, there are some styles we’ll always reach for. Said styles? Oversized hoodies, tailored trousers and fresh denim.

Let’s start with the obvious: the hoodie. It’s the layer you’ll throw on for coffee runs, train commutes, or nights you “accidentally” stay out later than planned. This season, the vibe is neutral tones and clean finishes. Fear of God Essentials has nailed that slouchy, minimal fit. Stone Island is bringing its signature technical details into the mix. And Off-White’s collegiate-style zip-up throws in just the right amount of Y2K nostalgia.

Moving on to tailored trousers. Forget anything stiff or corporate; AW25 tailoring is loose, dark, and way more wearable than what you probably have sitting in the back of your wardrobe. Wide legs, softer fabrics, and relaxed cuts mean they can take you from desk to dinner without skipping a beat. Smart, but never try-hard.

And, of course, you'll need a pair of jeans. Straight-leg and baggy silhouettes still reign supreme, but the devil is in the details. Diesel is leaning hard into Y2K with logo-heavy washes (because why not), while Represent keeps things sharp and clean with heavyweight denim that feels built to last. Both play perfectly with chunky knits and loafers. Autumn outfits, sorted.

And finally, the bit everyone secretly cares about most: the shoes. Because let’s be honest, the right pair can turn “just okay” into effortlessly put-together faster than anything else. Your recipe to success is a triple threat: think loafers, boots, and trainers.

First up, the loafers. Still the ultimate transitional shoe, it’s cool without trying. Gucci is keeping things classic with preppy polish, while Valentino has gone glossy and modern - the kind of loafer that makes even jeans and a hoodie look thought-out. They’re smart, but not too serious, exactly what you want in autumn.

When it comes to boots, autumn is their natural habitat. As soon as the leaves hit the ground, out come the ankle boots, lace-ups and hiking styles. Sturdy enough for drizzle, sleek enough to sharpen up denim, and versatile enough to carry you right through to winter. This season, it’s all about height: and Prada is nailing the balance. Their sleek Chelsea boots deliver easy polish, while their chunkier, hike-inspired versions bring a gorpcore edge that still feels luxe when paired with tailored trousers or layered knits.

And, finally, trainers: the pair you’ll probably wear more than anything else. Adidas is still king when it comes to retro runners and classics (think updated staples that go with literally everything), while Hoka is owning the performance-meets-streetwear vibe with chunky soles. And don’t sleep on On: the minimalist trainer that’s become a front-row favourite, as likely spotted at fashion week as on your morning run. Between the three, you’ve got weekday commutes and weekend plans fully handled.
