THIS IS HOW TO MASTER TRANS-SEASONAL DRESSING

Go all in on layering, make outerwear a priority and let your accessories do the talking: this is how to navigate that tricky in between weather…

WORDS: MARNI ROSE MCFALL Photographer: jane doe

Big news. Spring is almost here (seriously, it’s coming). Top of the agenda as the seasons start to change? Mastering trans-seasonal dressing; aka the trickiest time of the year to get dressed. The key is to invest in some transitional pieces that you can layer up, take off and protect yourself from whatever the Great British weather throws at you.

On the hit list? Pieces made for layering, big energy outerwear and statement accessories that’ll give an instant refresh to the winter wardrobe you’re still needing to reach for. It’s time to stock up your coat collection with bombers and leather jackets, pile up your layers and refresh your wardrobe essentials – think hoodies, trainers and loafers. This is how to master trans-seasonal dressing, the new luxury way, with some help from Off-White, Jacquemus, Saint Laurent and more.

THE KEY SPRING JACKETS AND HOW TO STYLE THEM

There are two key coats to concern yourself with this season when it comes to trans-seasonal dressing: the bomber and the leather jacket. And for SS24, the fashion world has delivered the classics with clever twists that’ll instantly refresh your looks. Sound good? We thought so.

The bombers to buy? Off-White and Rhude have taken a leaf out of the varsity rule book with collegiate-coded styles that have instantly captured our attention. Vetements have opted for a racing-inspired take that would make even Lewis Hamilton jealous. Looking for something more pared back? Valentino have the answer with their all-black bomber. We’re willing to bet you’ll be wearing these all season long.

Easy and effortless: a leather jacket always looks good. Big black leather? It was a hot topic on the SS24 runways with everyone from Saint Laurent to Prada telling us it was time to ride. Fear Of God’s big baggy jacket in black leather is an instant winner (and everywhere right now), while Alexander McQueen’s take taps into that off-duty, ‘90s appeal. And the aforementioned Saint Laurent and Prada? They’ve delivered a classic biker and leather-ified blazer respectively.

IT’S ALL IN THE LAYERING

It’s time to get laid. For SS24, we’re betting on a pile up: clothes upon clothes upon clothes. Obnoxious layering, as we like to call it. The seasonal shift brings with it the need for pieces that’ll work with the ever-changing weather; pieces you can add or subtract depending on the forecast at hand. One of our favourites to do it with? Our fun-loving French fashion friend, Jacquemus. Start with a pair of baby blue boxers and throw on an oversized white tee. Then, pull up a pair of oversized, beige cargo trousers, keeping your pants on show for all to see. Up top, start with a shirt jacket, and add another one for good measure. On your feet? An easy pair of beige lace-up derbies that’ll see you well into the summer months.

LET YOUR ACCESSORIES DO THE TALKING

Little black bags, hot shades, soft touches: for SS24, our accessories are working overtime. As we head into the new season, updating your accessories game is one of the easiest ways to inject a point of difference to your looks. Opt for little black bags by way of Bottega Veneta, Off-White and Jacquemus that’ll see you through any event on your social calendar. Then, it’s time to level up.

OTT accessories are one of the key styling trends for SS24. So: how do you do it? Think big scarves, bucket hats, gloves, socks and sunnies. When it comes to your accessories, too much is never enough. Opt for a massive, oversized scarf via Jacquemus: their Carro Checked Scarf in fresh white and baby blue is the perfect trans-seasonal layer when added to light jackets and jumpers. Prada’s Logo Bucket hat in black nylon is also big news, and will see you through those inevitable spring showers (if you don’t mind being a little soggy…) Last, but not least, socks have become a hot topic in the fashion world as of late and are fast becoming one of the most important styling pieces in our wardrobe when paired with loafers, sneakers and granddad sandals. Burberry’s Monogrammed pair are a must buy.

THE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

Season to season, trend after trend, there are some styles we’ll always reach for. Said styles? Big baggy hoodies and large and loose trousers.

Cool, classic and culty: these made-for-everyday hoodies are a must-have in your trans-seasonal wardrobe. This season? We’re opting for oversized iterations in low-key, neutral shades. Gucci’s take, which comes in a chunky ribbed knit with colour-pop detailing to the sides, is a firm favourite. Dolce & Gabbana have gone nautical with theirs, decorating an easy grey hoodie with an anchor motif that adds a unique spin to the classic piece. While Off-White have delivered a logo-heavy take that comes in all-black with the brand’s name printed all over.

The ultimate smart casual option? Allow us to introduce you to the off-duty, big and baggy bottoms you need in your wardrobe. More relaxed than tailored trousers but more dressed up than jeans, easy wearing cargo pants are the style you need to have on hand as you make the trans-seasonal switch. Prada have delivered a khaki pair featuring the statement pocket detailing that was all over the SS24 runways. Gucci have taken the oversized memo and ran with it with their low-slung, relaxed fitting pants. And as for Rhude? They’ve covered their pair with statement silver buttons.

THE FOOTWEAR ESSENTIALS

Your shoes may be the last item you put on, but they deserve your full attention. What’s on your feet can be the difference between a good outfit and a great outfit, and we’re only interested in the latter. So: what styles do you need to master the trans-seasonal switch? Your recipe to success is a triple threat: think loafers, boots, and sneakers.

A pair of luxe black loafers will always be a welcome addition to your wardrobe and right now they are everywhere. Luckily for you, Prada, Gucci, and Valentino Garavani have delivered for the SS24 season with fresh takes on the wardrobe stalwart that have us in a chokehold. In true Prada form, the Diapason Loafers are an unconventional take. Sitting on a chunky sole, they come in a spherical shape with statement stitching and cut-out detailing. Gucci have decorated their Cordovan Loafer with a silver metal chain-link, complete with the brand’s iconic double G detail. While Valentino Garavani have crafted a relaxed take with their slip-on Logo Loafers.

As we ease into the warmer months, you’ll want a pair of boots that sit about ankle height; warm enough to navigate cooler days, cool enough to see you through sudden heat waves. Ami Paris are keeping it classic with a pair of glossy Chelsea Boots that’ll see you from office days straight into event season. Looking for something chunkier? Prada and Balenciaga have updated the classic combat boot. While Bottega Veneta are keeping things sleek and minimal with their slim-fitting Black Strut Boot.

And as for the sneakers? These are the box-fresh styles to note. True to form, Balenciaga have delivered dad sneakers via their 3xl Trainers. Oversized, sporty, and chunky, they look like they were pulled out of your dad’s ‘90s wardrobe. Looking for something lower? Prada’s signature Downtown Sneakers are the ultimate low-top sneaker, finished with the brand’s signature triangle logo detailing. More of a high-top guy? Saint Laurent have you covered with their chunky, all-white sneakers. And if you’re looking for something brighter, Gucci have added pops of colour to their Screener Trainers.
