THE KEY CULT BUYS TO INVEST IN

Now that’s what we call fashion: these are the cult buys of the season.

WORDS: MARNI ROSE MCFALL

One of the most sought-after labels in the fashion world? The cult buy. A piece that becomes iconic, dominating our Instagram feeds and winning the hearts of the fash-pack. And for 2023, your favourite brands have taken fashion up a notch. Think of it as fashion’s greatest hits because these are the styles that live rent free in our minds. From a plethora of It bags to the chicest dresses in the game and the tanknaissance, these are the cult buys to invest in this season, c/o Diesel, Saint Laurent, Prada and more.

1. GET THAT BAG

*Drum roll please*. Allow us to introduce you to the cult bags of the season. These are the bags that are cooler-than-cool, that have serious It girl endorsement and, naturally, have come from the hottest brands in the business. Gucci bags will always be a hot topic in the fashion industry (read, the #guccibag which has 347.4 million views on TikTok), but this season, one style in particular has caught our attention: the re-edition chain Horsebit Bag from Tom Ford era Gucci. Our love for the Diesel 1DR will never die, but this two-tone red and pink one is what our style dreams are made of. While Miu Miu and Prada have delivered the ultimate, unsuspectingly chic off-duty staples via the Utility and Moon Shoulder Bags.

2. GIVE ME GUCCI

There’s a kind of magic to Gucci monogram. It’s seamlessly always on trend and completely timeless. It’s a piece of fashion history, iconography, eternal style. But it always feels current, it’s always being worn by A-listers (read: Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny), the street style set and the fashion crowd. In short, it’s really cult. And this year, we’ve been blazing up our Gucci monogram via this bold tailored blazer.

3. HEAVY-METAL HITTERS

The hottest trend to come out of 2023? The trend that we’re going to be seeing for the next few seasons, nay, years? The heavy-metal hitter. Thanks to the killer combination of the hottest brands in the world and the hottest artist in the world, i.e., Beyoncé, our love for all things metallic has developed into a dedicated obsession, and we can’t get enough. Bottega Veneta have brought their a-game with hits of sparkling silver and gold in everything from bags to skirts to heels. The Attico are making the case for being disco-ready, all-day long. And as for Roberta Einer? Their silver Bandu Midi Dress hits two of the season’s key trends in one - cut outs and shimmer - and we can’t get enough.

4. POP THE HOOD

It’s time to say yes to the dress. Saint Laurent’s Hooded Maxi Dress that is. Anthony Vaccarello knows a thing or two about creating scene-stealing, season-defining dresses, and this year, the Hooded Maxi Dress captured the hearts of everyone from Jenna Ortega to Kate Moss. Nodding to one of Yves Saint Laurent’s O.G. muses, Grace Jones, the dress combines sexy/chic appeal with unconventional style, c/o the second-skin fit and statement draped hood. And this iteration in rich, rich burgundy does it for us. Make like Moss and cop it quick.

1. CALL IT A TANKNAISSANCE

Oh, the tank top. The power of this humble vest is not to be underestimated. Over the past year, the tank has evolved from NPC to MVP. And these are the ones we can’t stop wearing. Top of the list is Loewe’s take. According to Lyst, searches for Loewe’s Anagram Tank have increased 132% year-on-year. And it’s not surprising, thanks to the chic simple fit and low-key luxe logo detail. Prada have more than proved their dedication to tank top supremacy, creating not one, but two cult iterations this year alone. One is simple and silky, the other is covered in crystals. And as for Bottega Veneta? Their ultra-paired back iteration puts the ‘cult’ in ‘cult buy’.
