SPRING EDIT:

THESE ARE THE SHOES TO ADD TO YOUR BASKET

Ballet flats, chunky sandals, party heels: these are the shoes you need this season.

WORDS: HANNAH DUNN Photographer: Matt Brann

Spring is (apparently) here and summer is (hopefully) on its way, which means it’s time to put away your boots and give your shoe collection a much-needed refresh. Think chunky sandals (maybe wear them with socks for now), chic ballet flats and ‘sporty’ sneakers that look and feel good.

From Bottega Veneta’s ‘Jack Flat Sandals’ to Miu Miu’s cult ballet flats and Piferi’s wedding guest-ready heels, these are the shoes to invest in for spring and beyond.

THE ELEVATED FLATS

This one’s for the city girlies: aka the ones that often have to put in the miles to make it to dinner, drinks, dancing (delete as appropriate) but still want something fancy on their feet while they do. Meet your new BFF: the elevated flat - shoes that are comfy but still make you feel special.

Ganni’s ‘Feminine Buckle Ballerinas’ became the shoe of summer 23 and thanks to the addition of some new colourways, they’re set to continue their run. Piferi have delivered a chic take on the ballet flat (more on those later) with their mesh flats that’d work for everything from the office to the event. And ICYMI, Prada’s ‘Satin Mules’ are set to become the shoe of the season.

THE CLASSIC LOAFERS

Loafers are working overtime at the moment, appearing everywhere from the office to the pub to the Sunday stroll. And who can blame us for our obsession when they look this good? Pair with thick socks, jeans and tracksuits now, then switch to jorts, dresses and skirts come summer.

Top of your list? Prada's 'Show Loafer', a strong contender for their 'Chocolate Loafers', Valentino Garavani's 'V-Logo Gate Loafer' in a very chic off white, and Miu Miu's 'Leather Penny Loafer' with a fun white tongue.

THE CHUNKY SANDALS

Long may the chunky, oversized sandal reign supreme. Bottega Veneta’s ‘Jack Flat Sandals’ have got us in a chokehold this season. Whilst the burgundy has already sold out, the black and off-white versions are top of our list.

Delivering similar shapes are Miu Miu with their ‘Quilted Sandals’, Gucci with their ‘Double G Sandal’ and Jimmy Choo with their ‘Elyn Sandals’. Prefer a backless style? Jil Sander’s metallic ‘Buckle Sandals’ are amongst our favourites.

THE PERFECT PARTY HEEL

Along with the warmer weather comes the yearly onslaught of events, from weddings to summer parties and trips to the races. So, take this as your cue to start refreshing your occasion-ready shoe collection.

We’re talking wedding guest-appropriate strappy sandals, like Piferi’s ‘Fade 100 Sandals’ in silver. Or Bottega Veneta’s ‘Fringe Stretch Strap Sandal’, which features a fun, pom-pom inspired design attached to the top strap. Having to navigate grass? Gucci’s ‘Bella Sandals’ deliver a thicker heel which’ll help you through tricky terrain.

THE 'SPORTY' SNEAKER

In 2024 we like our trainers to have purpose. By this, we mean sneakers that look good, yes, but are also functional and comfortable. It’s no wonder then that sports brands are seeping into our everyday.

New Balance have just landed themselves a coveted spot on Lyst’s ‘Hottest Brands Index’, while Asics ‘Gel-Kayano’ trainers have become the go-to sneaker for the fashion set. And there’s been no escaping adidas Originals lately. If you’re looking to branch away from the cult Sambas (we’re naming no names) then meet the SL 72, the newly trending trainer from the brand, which comes in two of the season’s key colours: brown and green.

THE BALLET FLAT

Ballet flats have been enjoying a strong comeback over the past few seasons and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Miu Miu have added to their ever-growing collection this season with new colourways and all-over studded iterations that’ll add an instant vibe to any look. As for their sister brand Prada, it’s been all about bold colours, starting with the hue of the season: red.

If you want to invest in something timeless but with an edge, Jil Sander’s ‘Buckle Ballerina’ comes in a chic, soft black leather but features a gold buckle around the ankle. They've come a long way since the fold up versions we'd stuff into our bags...
