SKIN EDIT:
From essential care to expert formulas, visibly healthier skin starts here - the FLANNELS way.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by skincare trends, you’re not alone. Serums, toners, acids - and in what order? It can be exhausting. What actually works, what’s just noise, and why does building the “perfect” routine feel so hard - sometimes leaving your skin worse off than when you started.
With so many products and trends competing for attention, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. But maintaining a healthy skin barrier is the foundation of smooth, balanced, and resilient skin.
WHAT'S A SKIN BARRIER?
Think of your skin’s outer layer like a brick wall. The “bricks” are your skin cells, and they’re held together by fats called lipids (like ceramides). Together, they form your skin barrier - keeping the good stuff, like moisture, locked in, and the bad stuff: like pollution, toxins, and UV rays - out.
Your skin barrier also includes a thin, slightly acidic layer on the surface called the acid mantle. When your skin’s pH is balanced, this layer helps prevent harmful bacteria from growing and supports healing when your skin is damaged. Pretty smart, right?
In a nutshell, your skin barrier plays a huge role in how your skin looks and feels. No pressure.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR SKIN BARRIER IS COMPROMISED?
When your skin barrier isn’t functioning as it should, your skin is usually quick to let you know. You might notice tightness, redness, dryness, or tiny bumps that won’t budge. Breakouts may appear more frequently, or your go-to products start to sting or irritate your skin. These are all common signs of a compromised skin barrier.
So, what’s behind it? Often, it’s everyday factors - too much sun exposure, over-exfoliating, or using products that are a little too harsh. Even something as simple as switching laundry detergent or spending a bit too long in the sun can trigger irritation. We’ve all been there.
The good news? A compromised skin barrier isn’t permanent - and with the right approach, it can be repaired and restored.
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY SKIN BARRIER?
When your skin is struggling, the best thing you can do is go back to basics. Think a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, and a rich, nourishing moisturiser. Step back from harsh exfoliators and strong acids, and reintroduce products slowly so you can pinpoint which ingredients your skin doesn’t like.
Supporting your skin barrier is all about consistency, patience, and choosing products that focus on hydration, soothing, and repair. Give your skin what it needs, and it will do the rest.
Chasing that fresh, healthy glow? Double cleansing is a great place to start. It’s a simple two-step method that ensures your skin is truly clean - without stripping it.
Begin with an oil cleanser or cleansing balm, like Bobbi Brown’s Extra Cleansing Balm or ESPA’s Optimal Skin Cleansing Oil, to melt away makeup and oil-based build-up. Not a fan of oils? A no-rinse micellar water, such as Clarins Cleansing Micellar Water, is a gentle and effective alternative. Your second cleanse should be water-based, helping to remove any leftover residue along with sweat and dirt. Done properly, double cleansing works well for most skin types and is especially helpful if you wear makeup regularly or have oily or acne-prone skin.
Step 1: Start with 2-3 pumps of oil cleanser onto dry hands and massage onto dry skin using circular motions. Take your time, around 1-2 minutes should be enough to melt away makeup, SPF, and the day’s pollution.
Step 2: Gently remove residue by dampening one of Clinique’s cleansing cloths and softly sweep it over your skin to remove any leftover residue. No harsh rubbing - let the cloth do the work.
Step 3: Next, reach for a gentle, water-based cleanser. Our current favourite has to be MAC’s Canvas Cream-To-Foam Cleanser. Squeeze a pea-sized amount into your hands, lather, and gently massage over your face.
Step 4: Don’t skip the details Make sure you cleanse around the hairline, neck, and ears - these areas are easy to forget but collect just as much buildup.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Your skin should feel clean, fresh, and comfortable - never tight.
The secret to beautifully hydrated skin begins with understanding your skin type. Dry skin thrives on indulgent, oil-rich formulas such as Dermalogica’s Super Rich Repair, while oily complexions prefer feather-light, water-based textures like Clinique’s iconic Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator.
A well-chosen moisturiser should combine humectants - think glycerin and hyaluronic acid - to draw moisture into the skin, alongside nourishing emollients like oils and fatty acids that leave the complexion smooth and supple.
TIP 1: Technique
Gently massage in gentle upward circular motions until fully absorbed.
TIP 2: Application
Don’t over-apply. A pea-sized amount for the face is often enough.
Mastering your double cleanse and locking in the right moisturiser is important, but the true cornerstone of any skincare routine is SPF. Thankfully, the world of sun protection has evolved - gone are the days of greasy, heavy formulas that have historically put people off protecting themselves.
Today, there’s an SPF for every lifestyle: convenient sticks like Givenchy’s Skin Perfecto UV Stick SPF 50, complexion-enhancing options like Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Skin Tint SPF 15, and sweat-resistant solutions like Shiseido’s Sports Invisible Protective Mist.
TIP 1: Apply Enough Use a generous layer of sunscreen to cover all exposed skin. Think face, neck, ears - and any other areas exposed to the sun.
TIP 2: Re-apply Regularly
Every two hours, or immediately after sweating, swimming, or towel-drying.
TIP 3: Combine with Skincare
Apply after cleansing and moisturising to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
