STYLE NOTES:
Chic slip dresses, statement tees, easy separates: this is how to get dressed on holiday.
Mastering the art of holiday packing isn’t easy, which is why we’ve turned to stylist Emma Rose Thatcher to share her expertise. Creating three easy-to-follow holiday looks, that – spoiler – can be mixed and matched and multiplied, Emma Rose has nailed the formula for summer holiday dressing.
From chic ‘90s-inspired slip dresses that work just as well for dinner one night as they do flung over a bikini the next day, to easy separates that you can wear together or apart, on the flight, on the beach or dressed up for drinks, and, of course, a classic black summer dress that works for day and night.
Choose a few simple essentials - a pair of black flip flops, some classic sunglasses and a roomy basket bag - and you’re set for the week.
Emma Rose Thatcher, we’re taking notes…
A chic slip dress is always the first thing I pack for a holiday. This one from Sir The Label (an Australian brand I love for its effortless sun-ready pieces) really stood out for the soft, muted tones that feel perfect for evenings in Mallorca. I’m drawn to that '90s minimalism, and the simple cut keeps it timeless, while the print makes it feel special. I re-wear my holiday wardrobe year after year, so I look for quality, versatile pieces that I know I’ll still be excited to wear next summer. My holiday style is super pared back- think slicked-back hair, minimal makeup, and easy pieces like this. I wore it for our anniversary dinner at Ca’s Patro March, one of our favourite spots for fresh fish by the sea. I kept it simple with flip flops and added my Cult Gaia bag for a bit of a statement.
I always pack a statement tee, they’re such a good multitasker. This Chloé one worked perfectly with my St Agni cargo trousers for the flight, with a skirt for breakfast, or just thrown over a bikini and sarong for sundowners. I tend to stick to my usual wardrobe staples even when I’m away - I want to feel like myself, not dress like a different person just because I’m on holiday. That’s why I love having a few go-to pieces I’d wear at home, too. I took this tee in my usual size rather than sizing up - I like how it sits close to the body and balances out more relaxed pieces.
A black dress is one of my summer essentials, and I always bring my favourite of the season when I travel. This one from St Agni - another beautifully simple Australian brand - ticks all the boxes. It’s minimal, elegant, and can work for just about anything while you’re away. I wore it to wander around the village in Deia, paired with simple sandals and my Dragon Diffusion basket bag, which comes with me on every trip. It’s big enough for all the essentials and neutral enough to work with everything. I tend to stick to a consistent colour palette when I pack- it just makes life easier and means everything mixes and matches effortlessly. Plus, it leaves space in the suitcase for local finds!
