Neon liner, bright brows and loads of gloss: this is how to create a noughties makeup look.
Y2K nostalgia is everywhere right now, and it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to jump on the Y2K trend that’s taking the fashion and beauty world by storm.
The best way to do it? A Y2K-inspired makeup look. With the help of makeup artist Ana Takahashi, the artist behind our latest beauty shoot, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to nailing neon liner, bright, skinny brows and glossy, nude lips.
Want to make it feel more 2022 than 2002? “I feel like this time round we’re cherry-picking the best bits… I think we’re looking back to that era and trying to push the looks forward with modern flairs”, says Takahashi. “Take the skinny brow - but the skin is fresher, the lines are crisper and the lip liner a little more blended”. Sounds good to us.
I wanted the look to be super girly but also have a tougher, cyber, futuristic edge... I wanted to do my signature skinny brow and then have fun with the eyes. The lips had to be that ‘00s brown that was so prevalent.
We all love reminiscing about our youth …and the Noughties were such a rich time for experimenting with hair and makeup.
Step 3: We then worked with blue shadows and pencil liners to make a more modern blue eye that referenced the garage-style blue eye… a nod to the MTV pop stars of that era.
Step 4: Next, we used a classic matte brown on the lip to ground the blues and pinks.
I’m inspired by the subcultural music heroines of that period. From Gwen Stefani to Ashanti and Fergie… and how they seemed so distinctive with their own looks and vibes. I love that era of style.
