SUMMER TRENDS EDIT:

THESE ARE BAGS EVERYONE WILL BE CARRYING THIS SUMMER

Pops of colour, new textures and doctor's bags: these are the styles to add to your rotation.

WORDS: HANNAH DUNN

Places to go. People to see. Bags to be seen with. Summer calls for a special wardrobe of bags, from the tote bag that you can cram everything in – including your kitchen sink if you wish – to the trending bag of the season, the doctor's bag, and colour-pop bags that’ll see you through the summer event season. As for the bags we can’t stop thinking about? It’s time to get reacquainted with textures and your favourite styles in the year’s hottest hue, brown. From Prada to Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta, these are the SS25 designer handbag styles to be seen with this summer.

Red Gucci bag

1. COLOUR FIX

Want to embrace more colour into your wardrobe? Summer is the moment. And whilst head-to-toe colour might feel intimidating, a pop of brightness can be an easy route in. So which colours of the rainbow are the ones to embrace this season? Cherry red has working overtime over the past year. Glossy, rich and expensive, the deep burgundy can easily elevate any look. Gucci’s Rosso Ancora shade is the perfect place to start.

Time to try something new? It’s all about the baby blues and cotton-candy pinks, which conveniently also make the best colour combinations when mixed with a red. Handy. Go for over-the-shoulder styles and top-handle bags c/o Gucci, Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta.

Chloe raffia bag

2. NEW TEXTURES

Whether you call it a straw, basket or crochet bag, raffia bags are a firm fixture each summer, but for 2025 they’re coming in all shapes and sizes. Chloe have paired the fabric with their usual boho treatment, in the form of their ‘Summer Banana,’ which blends raffia with a thick leather handle. Prada are keeping things more structured with a crochet tote bag, featuring a short and long handle option. While Saint Laurent have covered one of their signature pouches to create the perfect bag for summer events; think weddings, races, nights out on the town.

For those who prefer a more city-ready texture, woven bags are king this season. Bottega Veneta are well known for their intrecciato technique, which appears across their most-wanted handbags. Elsewhere, Dragon Diffusion and St. Agni are making waves with their takes on the trend, creating room totes that can work just as hard to the office as they can to the beach. Smart.

Miu Miu black bag

3. DOCTOR'S NOTE

A doctor’s orders we can definitely get onboard with… for SS25 doctor-inspired holdalls are our sartorial prescription of choice. Practical, functional, chic (yes, really) they tap into a childhood love for playing dress up and deliver a grown-up polish we all crave. Miu Miu are leading the charge with multiple iterations, but our favourites? Their mini Arcadia Matelasse, which has been shrunken down to dinky proportions, and the Suede Beau Bag, which taps into two other big bag trends this season: chocolate brown and soft suede.

Jacquemus have created a mini version that can be worn tucked neatly under your arm, while Prada and Ferragamo have all delivered more typical dimensions with big, roomy bags that will fit in everything but the kitchen sink. And your stethoscope of course.

Prada black bag

1. THE LONG STORY

East-west bags have been gaining traction over the past year and for summer 2025, they’re hitting their stride. Defined by their small, ultra-long shape and structured silhouette that extends beyond their handles, many designers are now playing with the proportions and offering up their own takes. Whilst all don’t obey by the rules, it does mean there’s a whole host of lengthy bags to take your pick from for SS25.

Jacquemus Pochette comes in a vivid green that’ll brighten up any summer occasion, while Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo Clutch brings the proportions in the shape of a large clutch, complete with top handle. For something more practical, Prada’s Large Pocket bag features a high-shine finish, useful pockets and black shoulder straps with chunky gold hardware.

Pink Acne bag

1. COLD SHOULDER

Shoulder bags might not be anything new, but they are catching our eye this season. Practical in their nature, they’re minimal, fuss-free and easy to wear. For SS25, however, they’re coming with a few twists. Take Acne Studio’s Bowlina Mini Leather Bag in calamine-lotion pink, which features a structured, geometric base and double zip. Or Fendi’s soft and slouchy Mamma Baguette, a bigger, chunkier take on their iconic Baguette. And Jimmy Choo’s Drawstring Tote which might just be our new favourite workwear bag, thanks to its sack-like ability to pack away all our worldly possessions; laptop, lunchbox, the works.
