THE SPRING TRENDS EDIT:

SS23 BAG TRENDS TO KNOW

Paragraph

WORDS: MARNI ROSE MCFALL

Ultra-loud looks. Pops of colour. Big energy accessories. Spring comes with a fresh new attitude. And what better way to kick off the season than with a brand-new bag? And this season, the fashion world has delivered, big, with a host of handbags so hot it hurts. The only rule to follow when it comes to your most hardworking accessory? There are no rules. From forever classics to statement Y2K pieces, there’s never been more styles to add to your wardrobe. And honestly, we want them all. From Saint Laurent and Prada to Diesel and Miu Miu, these are the SS23 bag trends to know.

THE TOP-HANDLE BAG

Prefer your precious cargo right where you can see it? We’ve got good news: your hand-held device just got an upgrade. Top of our list? Jacquemus’ iconic Le Grand Chiquito bag in a hue of soft white that was made for spring. If you’re looking for a cult bag, Acne Studio’s Distortion Mini Bag - which has been touted by the likes of Stephanie Broek, Little Simz and Rosalía - is the one. Jil Sander’s Goji Small Purse fits the minimal brief, while Amiri’s Nappa Bag goes in on streetwear appeal. Grab ‘em and go girls.

1. THE OVERSIZED TOTE BAG

Your handbag? Supersize it. For SS23, bigger is better, and the season’s hottest brands have you covered. New to FLANNELS, Marc Jacobs’ iconic collection of Tote Bags is now available to shop. And the ultra-large Monogrammed Tote Bag is a good place to start. Bottega Veneta have given their signature woven leather the OTT treatment by way of the Oversized Tote Bag. Still craving logomania? Versace’s All Over Tote Bag ticks all the right boxes, while Saint Laurent and Max Mara have delivered with more pared-back approaches to the tote.

2. THE Y2K HANDBAG

The Noughties are (still) reigning supreme. And we couldn’t be happier about it, which is why this season, Y2K bags are everywhere. One of the key bags of the season, the Jacquemu’s Bisou in a juicy hit of lime will provide all the vitamin C you’re looking for. While Diesel’s 1DR remains one of the hottest bags in the biz, thanks to its blown-up logo and Y2Krazy detailing. Glenn Marten, we applaud you. Miu Miu’s Crystal Shoulder Bag packs in the showstopping appeal thanks to their Matelassé motif and party-ready crystal. And Saint Laurent’s Jamie Bag, decked out in clashing monogram, is everything our Y2K dreams are made of.

THE DENIM BAG

In 2023, denim is taking over. No longer the reserve of our jeans, everyone’s favourite heavy-duty material is now the stuff of It-bag material. Top of our list? The just landed Mugler Spiral Curve Bag. The very first handbag by creative director Casey Cadwallader, the Curve Bag nods to the houses heritage by transforming their signature contoured silhouettes into a piece of arm candy. As for Givenchy? Straight out of their SS23 show, which was awash with dirty denim, the Quilted Denim Crossbody Bag is a non-negotiable this spring. Acne Studios have given their signature Mushubi bag the denim treatment. Ft. their signature twisted knots; it comes in a hue of pale blue that makes for the perfect transitional piece.

3. THE SHOULDER BAG

Sleek, chic and timeless, this spring we’re going back to basics with classic shoulder bags. What should you be looking for in a shoulder bag? Think endless wearability, cult appeal, and a bag that can be dressed up or down. The Prada Cleo has long achieved It bag status, and in 2023, it’s as coveted as ever. Right now, anything with a Saint Laurent logo on it is hot topic, and the Hobo Calfskin Bag is an investment piece you’ll be wearing for years to come. Burberry’s Lola Bag in quilted leather is a failsafe bet that’ll level up any outfit, while Stella McCartney’s Small Chain Shoulder Bag in their cult mushroom leather is genius. And if you’re in the mood for monogram? Valentino and Gucci have covered their classic baguette bags in all-over logo detailing.

1. THE GOING-OUT BAG

The fashion world is still in its mirror ball era, and we couldn’t be happier. The easiest way to jump on the trend? A heavy metal hitter from Paco Rabanne. Architects of the very first chain-mail dresses back in the ‘60s, their Nano Metal Shoulder Bag is a piece of fashion history and a big statement. Miu Miu opted for a softer take on the trend, decking out their signature Matalesse handbag in iridescent silver. While Prada and Burberry have gone all in, covering their iconic mini bags in shimmering tonal crystals. Bags made for dancing all night? Yes, please.
