The brand was originally born in 1984, then, known only as Hunza. Born under the creative direction of Peter Meadows, who engineered the now instantly recognizable crinkle fabric, the brand soared to popularity after an appearance in a certain film… Yes, we’re talking about that cut-out mini dress worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The dress, which was two-tone white and blue and featured two daring cut-outs to the centre, would go onto be one of the most iconic movie fashion moments of the decade. And it put Hunza on the map.
And since then, things have just been getting bigger. Back in 2015, Georgiana Huddart was appointed as creative director, (which was when the G was added), and Huddart would go on to completely relaunch the brand.
Huddart’s love for the brand runs deep. Her mother had worn dresses and swimsuits from the brand throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s and Huddart herself used to dress up in pieces from the brand as a teenager. By her 20s, she was scouring vintage stores to find Hunza pieces, and eventually she tracked down the brand’s founder, Peter Meadows, and decided to relaunch the brand with a contemporary spin. And the rest, as they say, is history.
In 2021, WWD dubbed Hunza G: “The swimwear world’s biggest success story,” after Huddart relaunched the brand to international acclaim, and, fashion world obsession. The thing that makes Hunza G so special (aside from the obvious)? Their designs all come in one size, in the signature crinkle material, and they fit everyone. Really. As a result, the brand has become a favourite of women everywhere, even becoming a go-to for maternity wear as it’s often one of the only things that fits or feels comfortable. Speaking to the magazine, Huddart explained “People love the heritage aspect, and I think the one-size approach is just amazing for women. There’s nothing better than everyone being able to shop for the same product whatever size or body shape you are”.
