THE DATE: PRETENTIOUS PUB

Valentine's Day outfits to wear to the pub

Taking your other half to the pub on Valentine’s Day? Only one kind of pub will do: the pretentious pub. You know the one: where the fashion crowd, art kids and street style set congregate en masse. They’re the setting for every TikTok about British pub culture, and you’re mandated by pub law to order Guinness and scampi fries. That kind of pub. But what should you wear? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with outfits that don’t miss.

You’ll need an ensemble that proves you’re the most chill girl in the pub. And that’s where Bottega Veneta comes in. Their big beige trench is a real scene stealer: in a shade of warm caramel beige that’s practically good enough to eat, it’s a seriously elevated essential. And the real killer detailing? The collar that comes ft. the brand’s signature intrecciato weave. Huge. Underneath? A big blue button down layered under an old-school chic Alexander McQueen cardigan and a pair of that girl Khaite jeans. As for your accessories? Stay on theme with classic pieces, like Jacquemus’ Bambino Bag, Prada’s Triangle belt and a pair of heeled Tom Ford loafers. Just don’t blame us if everyone in the pretentious pub falls in love with you.

It’s time to do date night, the Stone Island way. Opt for a chunky knitted polo that screams babygirl and is finished with the signature badge detailing. Down below? Opt for a pair of serious, jet-black tailored trousers from Amiri. Up top? A colour-pop coat c/o Cole Buxton. Their Hooded Jacket in cracked-up leather will fit right in next to those grungy leather pub couches. Keep your accessories simple with a Cross Body Bag and Clip On Wallet from Bottega Veneta and some good old Gucci loafers. You’re welcome.

THE DATE: (HE)ART ATTACK

From the Tate and the Saatchi all the way to the Gallery of Modern Art and the Walker, the UK’s roster of art galleries is even more impressive than your roster of potential Valentine’s dates. Making them one of the hottest destinations to take your date to. And it’s not surprising. Art galleries offer ample opportunity to a) dress to impress and b) impress via intellectual musings and thoughts about all things artsy. So, you can show off your outfit and your art knowledge. That’s what we call a win-win situation.

The key is to keep it casual. Opt for a black leather jacket and turtleneck combo (artsy girl must-haves) and a pair of big horseshoe jeans via Eb Denim. PSA: horseshoe jeans (i.e. jeans that go out at the knee and in at the ankle) are one of the hottest denim trends right now, according to Style Analytics who reported a 45% increase in searches for the style. Wear with cult accessories, like Gucci’s iconic 1995 re-edition Horsebit Bag, Balenciaga’s larger-than-life welly boots and a woven belt from Bottega Veneta. She’s an art girlie now.

It’s all about super slick streetwear styles. Cole Buxton’s fluffy Hooded Jacket is the perfect starting point. Cut from super soft grey shearling, it fits the brief for both dates and the cooler weather. Pair with a soft blue polo shirt from Ami Paris and distressed, ultra-arty jeans from Acne Studios. Finish things off with an It bag and sneakers from Prada, and your outfit might just end up installed in the gallery as a piece of art itself.

THE DATE: SMOL PLATES DINNER

Rustic bread, juicy olives, natty wine. Tiny portions of pasta and oddly flavoured butter. The small plates dinner does not miss. The names on our minds this Valentine’s Day? London’s It restaurants, read: Jolene, Rita, Louie and Leo. The small plates dinner is elegant. It’s fun, sassy, chic. She prides herself on her Instagram-ability, and the décor hits as hard (and sometimes harder) than the food itself. So, it goes without saying that your small plates dinner outfit, has to slap as hard as the miniature portion of anchovies and sourdough that you’ll inevitably be served.

Take a leaf out of the Sugababes’ book with a ruby red dress. The one in question? This ultra-mini dress from Norma Kamali. In a spicy hit of chilli red, it hits two of the season’s biggest trends – micro hemlines and the colour red – and delivers an instant statement. To style? Add jet black accessories in the shape of Givenchy’s Shark Bucket Bag and Balenciaga’s instantly iconic (and very coquettecore) Bow Pumps. For a finishing touch, opt for Gucci’s Heart Pendant. It is Valentine’s after all.

Think pink. And before you roll your eyes and tell us that pink is a V. Day cliché, allow us to show you this bomber jacket from A Bathing Ape. Covered in a multi-tone pink camouflage and finished with the iconic ape graphic, it’s anything but predictable. As for the rest of your look? The key is to keep things simple. Think a slick white button down, chunky boots and easy shorts. Winter shorts have been big news this season having popped up in collections by the likes of Diesel, Fendi and Jil Sander. And this pair from Balenciaga are the perfect combination of style and comfort (because comfort is king when it comes to date-night confidence). To finish, add a pair of extra thick – and ribbed – socks, a big roomy tote bag (you’ll need space to store your Valentine’s gifts) and a bedroom-to-boardroom style tie.
