LACOSTE X GOOP:
There are some images of Gwyneth Paltrow that will stay ingrained in the mind forever. The actress in a toffee-coloured mink coat, complete with perfect blonde bob, red hair clip, pink gloves and that all-important blue-and-white striped Lacoste polo dress, is one.
The look in question? The signature fit of one of Paltrow’s most famous on-screen personas, Margot Tenenbaum. Aka, the adopted daughter of Wes Anderson’s infamous The Royal Tenenbaums family. You can understand then, how Lacoste and goop arrived at their first ever collection.
An ensemble of pieces, from a modern take on a retro jumpsuit to an oversized sweatshirt, knit polo and – the dress in question – a striped polo, the capsule gives a big nod to the ‘70s but with a fresh, 2022 spin.
Each piece is finished with clever touches, from goop’s signature puff-sleeves and OTT collars to newly created logos in the shape of the iconic Lacoste crocodile and badge, each with the addition of goop’s trademark ‘G’.
Combining fashion and sport, much like the Noughties film did, the two teams went deep into the French brand’s archive, bringing new shapes and a commitment to a mutually appreciated palette. Shades of marine and navy make up blocks of colour, are used within stripes and checks and patterns, and applied to finishing details, like collars, cuffs and buttons.
It’s a look that served Margot from the age of 12 to an “adult”, aged 29, inspiring a legion of geek chic followers in her wake. If uniform dressing is your thing, then Lacoste and goop have delivered the goods, with a capsule can easily be mixed and matched.
For AW22, we say take a leaf out of Margot’s book. Go high and low with your fits, mix feminine touches with masculine pieces, wear sportswear even if you never intend to go to the gym. The fur coat? That’s optional.
