EARTH DAY 2023:
From Vivienne Westwood and Marine Serre to Sisley and Chantecaille, meet the labels at the forefront of a more conscious approach to all things fashion and beauty.
In 2023, we’re all looking for ways to be more conscious with our choices, and many of our brands are finding innovative ways to create their collections. From naturally sourced fabrics to refillable beauty schemes and brands dedicated to animal welfare, shopping consciously is starting to get a lot easier. As we hit Earth Day 2023, these are the labels at the forefront of a more responsible approach to fashion and beauty.
Stella McCartney has always been ahead of the game. A pioneer of ethical luxury, Stella McCartney has long been celebrated for not using leather or fur. And the trailblazing brand keeps breaking boundaries. From creating the world’s first vegan It bag out of Mylo™, a vegan leather alternative crafted from mycelium, the root system of mushrooms to engineering the BioSequin® a world-first sequin that’s made from plastic-free, biodegradable materials, the brand’s dedication to material innovation is unparalleled. In 2023, they’re delivering Y2K fits inspired by the Stella McCartney archive and slick streetwear styles that feel on trend and timeless. Stella McCartney, we salute you.
The priestess of punk and a pioneer of protest, Vivienne Westwood never played by the rules. The late designer was sounding the alarm on the climate crisis in the early 2010s and paved the way for many fashion brands to become more responsible. While the fashion world continues to mourn Westwood, the brand remains dedicated to using their voice to raise awareness of environmental issues. From working with organic fabrics and reducing their use of synthetic materials to using the catwalk as a portal for protest, they’re an innovator at the forefront of responsible luxury.
One of the hottest designers on the scene right now, Marine Serre exploded onto the industry back in 2017. And when it comes to responsibility, she takes no prisoners. At the heart of the brand’s design process is upcycled and recycled materials, and she’s committed to changing the fashion industry for the better. From the iconic crescent moon print to one of a kind, re-generated garments made from deadstock materials, Marine Serre’s responsible garments have achieved true cult status. And there’s never been a better time to add one to your wardrobe.
A true stalwart in the world of beauty, the French family business has been a luxury favourite since 1972. So, it’s music to our ears that they’re continuously looking at ways reduce their environmental impact. They’re pushing towards more responsible beauty by reducing their water and energy usage, as well as supporting measures to protect biodiversity. Thanks to their combination of nature and science, Sisley has developed a range of makeup, skincare, fragrance and more, that looks good on you, and is good to the planet. That’s très chic.
One of the hottest names on the streetwear scene, Heron Preston is at the top of his game. Having pioneered a unique aesthetic inspired by art, music and a utilitarian style, today, Preston is taking on a new challenge: expanding into the world of responsible fashion. Preston works with eco materials, which he has aptly nicknames LEDs (Less Environmentally Destructive) and more than half of his most recent collection was made from responsible materials. His end goal? Planet-friendly fashion that has forever in mind. Now that’s a sentiment we are fully behind.
Seamless, sleek, responsible streetwear? Oh my. Hailing from Northeast London, Saul Nash has quickly solidified himself as one of the hottest designers in the streetwear scene. A former dancer and choreographer, Nash’s brand is centred around movement, meaning, and technical innovation. As a designer, he is firm in his belief that his job is to solve problems, and responsible fashion lies at the heart of that, which is why his brand works with responsible fabrics like Primaloft to create their, now signature, athleisure-meets-everyday styles.
One of the hottest Scandi exports of recent years, Ganni are in a league of their own. They’re firm in their stance that they don’t identify as a sustainable brand, but they’re focused on being more responsible and minimising their social and environmental impact. Notably, they introduced their new line ‘Ganni Software’ in 2020, which is created from recycled materials. The brand has also launched ‘Ganni Lab’, an Instagram account that charts the development of their responsibility process and ensures transparency between the brand and consumers. To date, at least 90 per cent of their production comes from their responsible styles.
A true innovator in the world of hair, Larry King Hair was founded by celebrity hair stylist Larry King, who (when he isn’t styling celebrities and fashion shows) is making waves in the world of conscious beauty. Larry King Hair uses glass bottles and recyclable cartons that are engineered to contain wildflower seeds. Plus, they have a refillable range of products that are recyclable and designed to be decanted into the full-size bottles. Now that’s a good hair day.
Changing the world through responsible design; that’s the RÆBURN mission. The brand’s key pillars revolve around the three R’s, ‘remake, reduce or recycle’, and when it comes to responsible fashion, Raeburn is one of the designers paving the way towards more conscious consumption. From the iconic lab, where the brand offers tours to the public and illuminates the process behind responsible garment creation, to the launch of RÆBURN RÆMADE, a design process where garments are deconstructed and reworked into unique and ethical pieces, RÆBURN is a brand that is doing things differently.
Sylvie Chantecaille launched her eponymous brand alongside her daughter Olivia back in 1998. Over the past twenty years, the vegan and cruelty-free brand has developed a new approach to beauty through the use of pure ingredients and scientific research. The brand’s natural beauty products are powered by plant-based ingredients and pure botanicals. A result? A unique brand that’s kind to skin and kind to the planet.
