Ft. F*****g Fabulous, Black Orchid and Vanilla Sex: these are the scents to invest in.
Tom Ford has fragrances down to a fine art. Exploring contrasts and always delivering the unexpected, the house never plays it safe. From tongue-in cheek titles to warm leather fragrances, we break down the eau de parfums you need to know by mood and scent.
The only question is: which one first?
Ah yes, the one with the cheeky swearword on the bottle. It opens with herbal notes of lavender and sage for a creamy touch. At the heart, leather, vanilla and orris form a smooth, aromatic blend. White woods and amber at the base leave a lingering trail for up to twelve hours. It more than lives up to its name.
Tom Ford doesn’t do predictable. Café Rose leads with Turkish rose, blending it with black coffee for a darker, sensual depth. Ylang-ylang and patchouli, threaded through the middle, bring warmth that’s ideal for the colder months. As it settles, frankincense and sandalwood ground this one with a rich twist.
Smoky, smooth and full of depth, Oud Wood is one for evenings and after dark. Featuring rosewood at the top, the core of the scent comes through with rare oud notes. Sandalwood and vetiver fade into tonka bean and amber to round things off. The result? The kind of fragrance that feels like pure escape.
Sunshine, straight up. Light and warm, Soleil Blanc has the same effect as clear blue skies. Up front, pistachio and cardamom make the mouth water, with a hit of pink pepper for a spicy twist. Egyptian jasmine and tuberose in the mid-notes dial up the intensity. Benzoin and coconut milk as it settles leave you reminded of warm, carefree mornings.
The icon. Silky and sensual, Black Orchid is built for after-hours. Leaning into light and dark in true Tom Ford style, black truffle sits at the top with bright ylang-ylang for a mysterious edge. Dark spices and orchid unfold in the centre, before fruitier notes lift the mood. In the base, chocolate meets amber and vanilla for a deep, addictive finish that lingers long into the night.
Sweet, yet tart, Lost Cherry feels playful and decadent all at once. Ripe black cherries mingle with bitter almonds before Turkish rose and jasmine sambac cut through the core. Peru balsam and cedar make for a deep, moreish dry-down (the final notes of the scent) that keeps you coming back. Indulgent.
The heat of the desert, bottled. Full of sensuality, Ombré Leather lies close to the skin, warm and understated. Opening notes of cardamom give way to a rich leather accord flowing into the centre. Finally, amber, moss, and patchouli come together for a faintly sweet trail that leaves a lasting impression.
Inspired by Tom Ford’s private garden, Rose Prick is a hit of spring. With an unexpected twist, naturally. Sichuan pepper greets with a spicy tang before turmeric arrives with a bitter note. Almost like catching your finger on a thorn. In the mid-notes, a trio of rose (de Mai, Turkish and Bulgarian) gives it that just-bloomed vibe. Closing out the blend, patchouli and tonka bean anchor it with an earthy edge.
Whoever said vanilla is boring was wrong. Creamy, deep, and far from innocent, Vanilla Sex is anything but. Bitter almond essence leads with a nutty and deceptively sweet beginning. It’s at the heart that it really reveals itself, wrapped in soft florals. Towards the end, vanilla absolute and sandalwood unfurl into a sultry, more mysterious side that lingers long after you’ve left the room.
Neroli Portofino captures the ease of life on the Italian Riviera. Bergamot, mandarin and bitter oranges offer a crisp hit up front. African orange flowers and neroli unfurl in the middle for a fresh twist and a hint of sweetness. Ambrette and angelica mingle in the dry-down for a musky trail that’s perfect at twilight. Idyllic.
