HOW TO DO QUIET LUXURY FOR PARTY SEASON

Inside voices please. It’s time to master quiet luxury, the party season way.

WORDS: MARNI ROSE MCFALL Photographer: jane doe

Shiv Roy in Succession. Sofia Richie’s wedding. Kylie Jenner’s front row rebrand. 2023 was the year fashion used its inside voice. We’re, of course, talking about the unstoppable rise (and rise) of the quiet luxury movement. Yes, a movement. The #quietluxury currently has 378.9 million views on TikTok, it’s officially evolved beyond trend status. It’s more all-encompassing. It’s an aesthetic. It’s a lifestyle. And this lifestyle, extends into party season.

Simply put, quiet luxury is all about simple, minimal, incredibly chic pieces that are super understated. It’s the wardrobe basics, the expertly cut blazers, the beautifully crafted coats. The bags that you’ll hand down to your children, the timeless tailoring, the clean-lined dresses. It’s a palette of whites, blacks and creams. It’s simple, it’s chic and it’s taken the fashion world by storm.

So: how do you do quiet luxury for party season? It’s a conundrum. At a time of year where you want your looks to be loud and next level, how do you go about toning things, well, down? When you’re headed to the biggest party of the year, how do you make your quiet looks fit the tone? Oh, the trials and tribulations. But never fear, FLANNELS is here. In the spirit of Christmas, we’ve pulled together a comprehensive guide to styling out quiet luxury looks for the party season. From the key pieces you need to add to your wardrobe to how to style them, this is everything you need to know, ft. Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Prada, Khaite and more.

THE BACKBONE OF YOUR (PARTY) WARDROBE

Let’s start with the basics. If you’re going to nail quiet luxury for party season, you’ll need some key pieces in your arsenal. These are those pieces. The one-and-done, party-ready, low-key luxe pieces to hastily add to your wardrobe. Read: Off-White’s simple mini dress in navy blue. Dolce&Gabbana’s glossy leather bomber. Tom Ford’s tailored silk co-ord. And a classic slip dress. Slip into any of these and you’ve a) nailed the look and b) are ready to party.

IT’S TIME TO SUIT UP

In the party spirit? Good. Now, it’s time to nail the tailoring. A slick, sharp suit is your one-way ticket to finessing low-key luxe party looks. Enter: Off-White. Yes, the streetwear legends are jumping on the stealth wealth train. We told you it was taking the world by storm. Their take is a slim-fitting suit, paired with a thick knitted turtleneck and a pair of their signature trainers. As far as the colouring goes, opt for head to toe black. Obviously.

THE FUTURE HEIRLOOM

One of the hallmarks of the quiet luxury aesthetic? A simply excellent bag. You know, the kind you want your mother or grandmother to pass down to you, and you hope to pass on to your children one day. That kind of bag. And these are the ones at the top of our list. Saint Laurent’s Manhattan bag is one of the chicest styles we’ve ever seen. In a box shape, cut with clean lines, subtle gold hardware and in all over pearly white, we can picture it on Jackie O. Bottega Veneta’s latest It bag, the Gemelli in rich cocoa brown, features the brand’s classic Intrecciato weave (a must add to the low-key luxe repertoire) and more than hits the brief. Pro tip: opt for a smaller size to keep things party appropriate. Our Prada pick is their Brushed Handbag which comes in jet black and while its logo-less, it comes in a gentle triangle shape for a subtle, IYKYK nod to the brand’s history.

LET THE TANK TOP DO THE TALKING

Question: what is the hardest working item in your wardrobe? Answer: the tank top. It’s been a tank-tastic few years in the fashion world and the humble vest has developed main character energy. As it should. Need to refresh your collection? Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Khaite et al have developed perfectly fitting, plain tank tops which are the ultimate foundational basic. If you feel like turning up the volume? As far as low-key logos go, Loewe’s is the one to note, plus it was recently dubbed logo of the year by Lyst with searches up 132% year on year. Feeling it? Givenchy have adorned their tank top with a tiny silver logo. Festive.

THE CLEAN-LINED SKIRT

When you’re building a party-ready, quiet luxury wardrobe, opt for styles that feel like you’ve borrowed from your incredibly chic older sister. The easiest way to do that? A clean-lined skirt. It’s simple, it’s minimal, it’s elegant. It gives Jennifer Lawrence in her re-brand era. Our top pick comes from Bottega Veneta. Cream coloured, gently pleated and cinched at the waist, it screams Sofia Richie on her honeymoon. For something darker, Saint Laurent's jet-black maxi skirt will suit. If you’re loyal to the mini skirt, allow Prada to show you how to do it in a way that’s It girl, not school girl.

ALL DRESSED UP, BUT QUIETLY

Yes, there’s a way to do quiet party dresses. We’re pleased too. Long-time pioneers of the quiet luxury movement (read: the furore caused by Katie Holmes’ bradigan back in 2019), Khaite have created a party dress that’s the very definition of soft glamour. The Evelyn dress is delicate, form-fitting, all-black and softly falls down to the ankles. Basically, it screams (or, whispers) Grace Kelly. A crisp shirt dress is a quiet luxury essential, just ask Valentino whose Poplin Shirt Dress is one of our favourites for this season, and next. Want to feel fun and flirty while feeling elegant and classy? Opt for Saint Laurent’s Cowl Back Dress which proves that white may be the chicest colour.

THIS BLAZER MEANS BUISNESS

The thing with quiet luxury is it’s all about building blocks. You have to nail the basics. And one basic that will never go out of style is the blazer. A good blazer can a) instantly pull together an outfit, b) work for even the most formal occasion and c) be depended on to always look good. Acne Studios has delivered a blacked-out blazer that’s perfect if you prefer darker tones. For a lighter palette, Alexander McQueen and Magda Butrym have you covered with their grey and beige tailored picks. If you’re feeling adventurous, supersize your blazer and leave your trousers at home.

WEARING YOUR GRANDAD’S SUIT

There’s a reason our reference points for quiet luxury often look back to the ‘50s and ‘60s: it’s all about the classics. So naturally, old-school, oversized tailoring that looks like you borrowed it from your grandad is a key part of the aesthetic. The best bit about this? It fits in neatly with our obsession for big, baggy tailoring. Hurrah. And we’re styling it out with Alexander McQueen. Keep your suit large and loose, opt for slick black or grey houndstooth and throw on a tie for good measure. Sharp.

TAKE THE BUTTONS DOWN

Keep it crisp, pop your collar, take the buttons down a little. A button-up shirt is a wardrobe stalwart for a reason, so the fact they’re having a renaissance thanks to quiet luxury is welcome news to us. Go old school with crisp white shirts c/o Prada and Givenchy or opt for an all-black take from Bottega Veneta. For a dose of the baby blues, Valentino have you covered, they’ve even dressed up one of their shirts with a very festive bow. Unwrapping presents is the best part of Christmas after all.

SHOES TO STEP LIGHTLY IN

These shoes? They’re so quiet, they barely make a noise when you walk. Don’t quote us on that one. The finishing touch to any outfit, prove you’re the master to the silent rave of party outfits with a pair or IYKYK luxe shoes. Cool girl flats are high on the list with Prada’s Ballet Flats taking the top spot, while Gucci’s soft grey Mallory Mules go big on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy style chic. Loafers are, understandably, a mainstay part of the low-key luxe look, and Dolce&Gabbana’s take ticks all the right boxes. Shopping for a party boot? Bottega Veneta’s Ankle Boot is the one. Now, what are you waiting for? It’s time to head to the party.
