SPRING STYLE EDIT:
Statement-making pieces to take your wardrobe to the next level, c/o Prada, Givenchy and Vivienne Westwood.WORDS: FLORENCE TROTT
SS24 means business. It’s time fashion that pulls its weight. Enter: the statement making buy. Hard-hitting, attention-grabbing buys for busy boys who aren’t here to muck about. A new season brings with it the need for a wardrobe upgrade. A wardrobe that works as hard as you do. After all you’ve got places to go, people to see and looks to be seen in.
This season? The palette is fresh, the prints are playful and the silhouettes are exaggerated. It’s time for a new take on statement-making style that explores colour and proportion while being a) easy to wear and b) even easier to admire. Just don’t blame us from the side-eye of envy you’ll be at the end of.
Spring is about big energy. Score points for unapologetically loud shirts, clashing colours and winning jackets. This is fashion that breaks the mould. Really, we’re not in the business of following rules. Wear what you want, when you want, how you want. Easy no? From the printed shirts via Vetements and Givenchy to It-sneakers c/o Prada and Bottega Veneta these are the statement-making buys to add to your wardrobe this season.
Looking for a license to print? We got you. When it comes to wearing big bold prints, remember: there are no hard and fast rules. Too many people avoid prints for fear of looking like the weird family friend at a BBQ in a ‘fun’ floral shirt. This is a mistake. You might be weird, and you might be at a BBQ, but a big energy print while take your outfit to the next level. Promise.
Top of our list? Givenchy’s blue Lumberjack Shirt. Plaid and tartan are among the easiest prints to wear. Very accessible. Let’s call them ‘gateway prints’. Wear with utility trousers, shorts or jeans and you can’t go far wrong.
Next, there’s a whole spectrum of floral shirts to choose from, from Valentino’s Flower Shirt to Vivienne Westwood’s signature prints. Pulling them off is 50% styling, 50% attitude. Team Valentino’s short-sleeved boxy Flower Shirt with Tailored Shorts, an overshirt and black loafers for a sophisticated and utilitarian take on spring/summer dressing.
Finally, there are two ways to wear double print: matching, or clashing. For the former (which is more straightforward), team Vetements’ cult Fire Print Denim Shirt with the matching jeans. Alternatively, clash away. But there’s an art to this. Think contrasting colours and scale. Like this sheer black Vivienne Westwood Shirt and pale blue Floral Trouser. It shouldn’t work, but it does.
If jackets were bands, these bomber jackets would be the headline acts. They’re investment pieces that pack a serious style punch. Think of them as fashion heavyweights, adding instant flair to anything you wear them with. They’ll elevate simple outfits and are ideal for throwing on over jeans and a T-Shirt.
That being said, they’re not for the faint of heart. Givenchy’s pink Fur Varsity Jacket takes a bit of daring. Game? We believe in you. Team with a blue plaid shirt, a muted tee, trousers and Givenchy’s oversized leather bag and padlock necklace, and you’ve got a look that combines new age punk with grunge and a heavy dose of high fashion. We told you we’d show you how to make a statement.
Alternatively, Givenchy’s retro-inspired white Raglan Bomber and Gucci’s monogrammed GG jacket can be thrown on with anything from sweats to tailored trousers, while Nahmias’ Moto Jacket and Off White’s leather sleeved Varsity Jacket prove that leather really is better when you want to make an impression.
Embrace the spring season’s energetic mood with colour-pop kicks that put a bit of pep in your step. Yes, we went there. When you need to mainline a little extra energy into your look, these are the styles to look to. Even if the rest of your outfit is relatively understated, Bottega Veneta’s sherbet green snakeskin Orbit Sneakers pack a punch. That’s the added value of a colourful trainer. You can wear them with pretty much anything – from your favourite old jeans to a pair of smartly tailored trousers – they’ll add a touch of low-key luxury to an otherwise unremarkable outfit.
Amiri have delivered with the Star Sneakers that come ft. a retro-inspired sole, pull tab and star print in pops of blue. Over at Prada? Their emerald green sneakers riff off the O.G. basketball shoe silhouette. The Downtown Triangle Logo trainers are finished in bright green leather with a glossy sheen that gives major sport luxe vibes. And as for Christian Louboutin? They’ve given us the tango treatment via the fluorescent orange Seveste Trainers. Pair with an all-white shorts and shirt combo for an instant holiday-ready fit.
Incoming: it’s time to convert to colour. This season’s palette will tempt even die-hard minimalists to try something a little louder. SS24 is not the time to be shy. Bolder is better.
Kick it off with a blue mood. A colour that suits everyone. It’s a fact that everybody looks good in blue. Denim is the most obvious choice for taking blue for a test run. Try a Givenchy denim jacket and jeans, or Bottega Veneta’s denim T-shirt if you’re up for something different. Alternatively, Rhude’s baby blue varsity jacket is a streetwear staple that makes a statement.
Next on the colour chart – green. Minimum effort, maximum impact, it’s a shade that’s easy to wear but guaranteed to make an impression. From pistachio to sage to racing car green, it’s fresh and verdant and ideal for spring. On the grocery list? Gucci’s green, top bar shades, Valentino’s emerald Bermuda Shorts and Casablanca’s Printed Shirt. That’s one way to get your five a day.
Red is one of the hottest trends this season, so there’s never been a better time to add some of the hot, hot hue to your wardrobe. Top of the hit list? Prada’s letterbox Red Logo Windbreaker. Pair with Moncler’s candy apple red T-Shirt and a pair of red-lensed sunglasses from Cartier.
Bags, jewellery, accessories: oh my. Whether or not you think of yourself as an accessories kind of man, we’d strongly suggest you give them go. These days, we’d be lost without a massive Givenchy cross-body bag to carry around our essentials in.
A bag isn’t just an overused backpack you stuff all your possessions into when you’re leaving the house. It’s a conversation starter. A head turner. A status marker. This season, oversized bags are in. We all know that bigger is better, and these prove it. They carry their weight – from Bottega Veneta’s sought-after padded tote to Valentino’s sleek black leather bag and Saint Laurent’s raffia tote with signature gold hardware, these bags mean business.
Finally, your outfit can only be improved by the addition of some jewellery. A statement necklace is an easy way to elevate any look. Alexander McQueen’s signature Skull Necklace and Versace’s iconic Medusa Chains are tried-and-tested pieces that you’ll wear again and again. If you’re into streetwear, we’d like to point you in the direction of Hatton Labs’ cult pearl necklace. The London-based brand draws inspiration from the city’s subcultures, and their pieces look good paired with everything from a plain black oversized Tee, to corpcore shirts and colourful knits.
