THE STREETWEAR EDIT:
HOW TO STYLE STREETWEAR FOR SS23
Dirty-wash denim, all black fits and cult cargos: this is how we’re styling streetwear for spring.

Streetwear has come a long way from its subculture roots. A niche phenomenon that started with skaters, surfers and the world of hip-hop in ‘80s L.A., streetwear has experienced a stratospheric shift, evolving from the uniform of subcultures to a cornerstone of luxury fashion. Today, it’s at the core of our wardrobes. At its centre, streetwear is anything that embodies the spirit of the street. And in 2023, we’re entering a new generation.
From Off-White, the brand that brought the style into the mainstream, to the unstoppable rise of Diesel and the visionary Marine Serre, in 2023, streetwear is being propelled into a new era by some of the most exciting names in fashion. The key styles to know? Think dirty-wash denim, new gen cargo trousers and cult accessories. This is how to style the new breed of streetwear.

Regeneration, subversion and reinvention: pillars of streetwear, and, of Marine Serre’s designs. And they’re firmly at play in this look. If you’re looking to nail off-duty streetwear, then a tiny graphic tee and baggy pants is the way to do it. And Serre’s take is a good place to start. The Re-Gen Print T-Shirt is the one: made from deadstock materials each one is different; from colourways to patterns. Pair with the brand’s Moire Cargo Pants, a true street staple, and finish things up with Paris Texas’s knee highs, a relaxed baseball cap and Acne Studio’s Distortion Mini. This is a unique look that’s takes its cues from the O.G. street aesthetic and represents a new age of fashion.

You can’t talk about streetwear without talking about Off-White. The late Virgil Abloh pioneered a new vision for the style, transforming it from the stuff of subculture to a pillar of luxury fashion. And for SS23 we can’t get enough of the brand’s dark wash denim. It’s a low maintenance, staple style that makes a big impact. Case in point? The distressed Motor Crop top in a jet-black colourway and ft. distressed detailing. To style? Pair with oversized cargos, like the Toybox Pants, and add a pop of colour. The result? A layered look that pays homage to the origins of streetwear.

Grungey, dirty, culty: Diesel’s denim does it all. Over the past year, Diesel have established themselves as one of the hottest brands in the world, thanks in no small part to their cult denim offerings. And this look, which opened their SS23 runway collection, proves why. Re-inventing denim as we know it, the co-ord works with denim that’s been bleached beyond belief and plays with structured panelling and tulle detailing. In short, the look embodies the new age of streetwear, and has quickly become catnip for the street style set. Pair with the distressed folded bag and a bold, graphic eye by way of Off-White’s beauty line, “Paperwork”.

A key feature of streetwear? Cult styles. You know those details that are instantly recognisable, will elevate any outfit and are seemingly everywhere? Yep, those. And one of the main styles of recent years? The Marine Serre moon print. The style blew up back in 2020 when Beyoncé wore the design in the Black Is King video, and since then it’s become the uniform of street stylers everywhere. And for SS23, we’re wearing the print all over. The key pieces to know? The Re-Gen print shirt, the Second Skin Top, and the Printed Catsuit for a start.

In 2023, there’s no escaping double denim. The infamous look has infiltrated every area of fashion, and we’re firmly on board with its appeal. But the key to making it feel fresh? Less is more. Opt for a barely-there corset top from Frame – the Renaissance-inspired style has had a streetwear makeover, decked out in denim panelling – and pair with Diesel’s low-slung jeans. To take things up a notch? Contrast the deep blue denim with some pops of white. Mallet’s chunky trainers and the Diesel 1DR bag, aka, the most toted bag in the biz, are our favourite way to do it.
