Streetwear has come a long way from its subculture roots. A niche phenomenon that started with skaters, surfers and the world of hip-hop in ‘80s L.A., streetwear has experienced a stratospheric shift, evolving from the uniform of subcultures to a cornerstone of luxury fashion.

The streetwear pieces of today owe everything to the subcultures that defined the look. Think high fashion with a side of cultural cachet. Bringing together the worlds of music, sport, clubbing and fashion, streetwear has its roots in tribes ranging from the hip-hop crews of ‘80s New York to ‘90s club kids and early ‘00s skaters to modern sportswear and sneaker culture. Over the last decade, luxury designers have adopted streetwear as their own. It’s evolved into the highly coveted phenomenon we know today, ranging from refined luxury collections with an attitude, to independent labels riffing on streetwear tropes.

And in 2024, we’re entering a new generation. Led by contemporary designers bringing a fresh energy to the look, streetwear is being propelled into a new era by some of the most exciting names in fashion. The key styles to know? Think statement double denim, big energy sweats and Scandi-inspired sportswear. This is how to style the new breed of streetwear.

THE ELEVATED SWEATS

A streetwear staple, for SS24 a sweatshirt is much, much more than something to chuck on after a gym session. News flash: they can be glam, too. Few do it better than Anine Bing, whose small logo hoodie is our new favourite for high-low dressing. Come for the L.A.-inspired style, stay for the Scandi minimalism. All-American appeal and Scandi sensibility collide at the label. The result? A unique take on your wardrobe staples. Dress up your new sweat with the brand’s leather blazer and trousers, and finish with trending metallic accessories – silver sandals and an Anine Bing Gaia chain bag. A grey baseball cap is the final sportswear-inspired piece to finish the look.

DOUBLE DENIM FOR THE WIN

Aka, the ‘Canadian Tuxedo’, we’re serving up all the Britney-and-Justin-circa-2001 vibes – but make it chic. Famed for their mission to empower women through fashion, Magda Butrym are here to deliver a unique twist on the Y2K denim trend. They’re cutting the wardrobe staple with a high-femme, couture edge. The recipe? A denim corset, teamed with flared jeans, matching jacket and finished with a pair of high-femme pink satin sandals. Streetwear for the girls. Dreamy.

UNDERWEAR AS OUTERWEAR, BUT MAKE IT STREETWEAR

That’s right, you heard us. Bra straps (and the rest) are on show this season. This is streetwear served with a side of sex appeal – it isn’t all just sweatshirts and tracksuit bottoms. Another trend informed by Y2K nostalgia and our current obsession with everything sheer, put your underwear on display for a dose of ultra-loud, high-energy edge. Layer Acne Studios’ sheer black blouse over a denim bikini bra and team with the label’s distressed denim midi skirt and sleek brown leather ‘Bezither’ boots. We’re into it.

BIG AND BAGGY

It’s true what they say. Bigger is better. This season, everyone is wearing their denim baggy and their shirts oversized. This shift to big silhouettes – voluminous skirts, low-slung, wide-leg trousers, and billowing jackets – lends your look a slightly subversive and androgynous vibe. There’s no secret here – just opt for slouchy styles, by way of Axel Arigato’s Hydra co-ord. Playing with proportions is an easy way to look both laidback and fashion-forward. Finish with white ankle socks and a pair of box-fresh Axel Arigato ‘Sphere Trip’ trainers. Easy.
